Dan Swanö of (ex) Edge of Sanity

Global Domination: We at Global Domination saw fit to add your release, “Purgatory afterglow”, to our esteemed Class 6(66) hall of fame. Do you feel this album is worthy of such an honor?

Dan Swanö: Oh yes!! This album is contains some of the best songs from Edge Of Sanity and it’s about goddamn time that someone gives us another award for it (we won the “Zeppelin” award for “Best Swedish Metal Band” in 1994…)

GD: What was the ultimate goal for you while recording this album?

Dan Swanö: The finish the album before the next band came into the studio!! Also to go back to our roots a bit and revisit the style of “Unorthodox”. Some of the tracks are very anti-“Unorthodox” though, and these are the ones that still stand the test of time… The fast tracks are not even close to the quality of the “Unorthodox” songs in that style…

GD: Name something of interest that you remember from the recording sessions.

Dan Swanö: I don´t remember much at all. It was always a surprise when all the guys showed up!! I remember that I wrote “The Masque” the night before we went into the studio because I felt the album lacked this kind of epic mid tempo track with an arena death-chorus.

GD: If you could change any one thing about this album, what would you change?

Dan Swanö: To be honest, absolutely everything!! Not so much the songs themselves, but there are a few takes and a few things about the production that will haunt me till the end. But done is done and as long as you award us with this nice feature, I guess I should stop whining and like the läge!!

GD: Why do you think this album means so much to those who consider it a classic?

Dan Swanö: The album came out at a golden age for this kind of music. The “Twilight” song kicked open a lot of doors for me and a lot of other songwriters in this genre. I remember that Rob Flynn from Machine Head gave this song 4 out of 5 in Slitz magazine!! Cool dude!!

GD: Finally, as an artist and musician, what special place does this album hold in your heart?

Dan Swanö: I am really proud of “Twilight” and “Black Tears”, even though both versions could use a remix to really shine in all their glory… But the remastered versions that will appear on the upcoming “When all is said – The best of Edge Of Sanity” is definitely a step in the right direction.
